COMMERCE CITY, Colo. — Crosstown rivalries only mean that much more when a state championship is on the line.
That was the case Wednesday night at Dick's Sporting Goods Park, where No. 1 seed Mountain Vista met familiar opponent No. 3 Rock Canyon in the Class 5A state title game.
Unlike their scoreless tie earlier in the year, somebody had to win. Ultimately, it was the Golden Eagles who did just enough to edge the Jaguars, 1-0.
"Couldn't get better than that," said junior Laney Erickson, who scored the game-winning goal in the 67th minute. "We knew we had to work super hard if we were going to finish one."
Mountain Vista went undefeated (18-0-1) in route to its fifth championship in program history, and first since 2017.
Rock Canyon went 14-1-5, finishing as state runner-up for the third time in the past four years.
