COMMERCE CITY, Colo — Party like it's 1997.
Evergreen is bringing home its first girls soccer championship in 27 years (third overall) after the Cougars shut out Lutheran 2-0 in the Class 4A state title game at Dick's Sporting Goods Park on Tuesday night.
It was quite the surprise as Evergreen entered the playoff bracket as the No. 14 overall seed, pulling off multiple upsets in route to the championship.
Nadia Leunig scored the game-winning goal, and Gretchen Lynch added another as the Cougars ended their dream run on a six-game winning streak (14-5-1 overall this season.
"It's always good being the underdog," Leunig said. "It's super special."
No. 12 seed Lutheran reached the championship game for the second consecutive year, but finished as runner-up once again (13-5 overall).
