ARAPAHOE COUNTY, Colo. — Eight people inside an SUV were rushed to hospitals after they were involved in a serious crash with a semi truck in eastern Arapahoe County early Monday morning.
Colorado State Patrol said the crash happened around 2:15 a.m. when an Amazon Prime semi truck driver headed west on Interstate 70, struck a guardrail and then crossed the center median, hitting the SUV head-on in the eastbound lanes.
The SUV and the semi both caught fire after the crash, CSP said. Video from Sky9 showed that the semi's cab was destroyed in the fire. The SUV's body was intact, but it was heavily charred in the fire, Sky9 showed.
The semi driver didn't suffer any injuries in the crash, according to troopers.
The crash happened in the eastbound lanes of I-70 about four miles east of Byers, east of the Denver metro area, troopers said.
I-70 eastbound was closed for more than six hours from Byers on the west to Deer Trail on the east.
CSP is handling the investigation into what caused the semi driver to hit the guardrail and swerve across the median. The driver was cited for careless driving causing injury, CSP said.
