Woman accused of squatting in half-million-dollar home has moved out

The woman initially claimed to have “a verbal lease” to live in the Lakewood home also had felony convictions for identity theft.

LAKEWOOD, Colo. — A few weeks after 9NEWS Investigates highlighted the story behind a home in Lakewood, the woman who had been living there and who was the subject of neighbors' complaints has moved out.

It’s unknown where Mecca Busey moved off too, but she last told 9NEWS during an interview in May that she planned to fight for the home.

“I am not a squatter,” Busey said in an interview last month.

Neighbors around the home near West 10th Avenue and Sheridan Boulevard told 9NEWS Investigates that they saw Busey loading up her vehicle and moving out last week.

The original homeowner died early last year and did not leave behind a will. Shortly after his death, Busey moved into the home.

Dispatch and police records show officers began responding to the home for complaints about harassment, trespassing and “unwanted party.”

Neighbors said in police reports that Busey seemed to be squatting in the home without permission.

In an interview last month, Busy claimed she had a “verbal lease” with the homeowner's granddaughter to live in the home rent-fee with the condition she would make upgrades to the house.

A review of police reports and court records revealed the granddaughter was described as a “vulnerable adult” who might not have the “mental capacity” to make decisions. The granddaughter is living in a different home with a caretaker.

9NEWS also found Busy had at least two felony convictions for identity theft. She claimed she was not committing crimes on the property.

“They’re saying things that are completely untrue. There has been no criminal activity here,” Busy said in her May interview.

As of Monday, yellow tape around the property and the house's locks had been changed. Busey did not respond to attempts to contact her for comment.

A public administrator appointed by the court system in Jefferson County has control over the property and is working to figure out the rightful heir.
