DENVER — "He's a savage!" ESPN broadcaster John Buccigross shouted into the TV call.
Buccigross was referring to University of Denver hockey forward Jarid Lukosevicius, who scored back-to-back goals just 16 seconds apart in the 2017 Frozen Four championship game on April 8, 2017.
Lukosevicius recorded a hat trick in the second period to power the Pioneers to a 3-2 win over Minnesota-Duluth to capture the national championship. It was the Pios' eighth title in program history, tying them second all-time with North Dakota -- behind only Michigan with nine.
Lukosevicius was the first player to notch a hat trick in the national championship since Jim Montgomery, Denver's head coach in that 2017 title game, in 1993.
Goaltender Tanner Jaillet secured the victory with 38 saves, 16 of which were in the third period.
