On this day in sports: DU hockey ends national title drought

The Pioneers won the national championship game on April 10, 2004 for their first title in 35 years.

DENVER — It was the Denver Pioneers' return to glory.

The University of Denver hockey team had already hung five national championship banners, but the Pios then went through a 35-year title drought.

On this day in sports, April 10, 2004: DU reclaimed the label of national champions with a 1-0 victory over the Maine Black Bears at the Fleet Center (now TD Garden) in Boston.

Denver would repeat as back-to-back champs in 2005, and would later add its eighth national title in 2017.
