Man dies while snowmobiling in northwest Colorado

Crews were notified of a 38-year-old man who was hurt in the Sand Peak area, Sunday afternoon.

RIO BLANCO COUNTY, Colo. — A man is dead after being injured on a snowmobiling outing in Rio Blanco County.

At about 3:50 p.m. Sunday, the Rio Blanco County Sheriff's Office received an inReach SOS activation from a Garmin GPS. 

The location of the activation was the Sand Peak area, according to the sheriff's office. That is about 45 miles northeast of Meeker and only accessible by snowmobile, the sheriff's office said.

Garmin GPS received a message that a 38-year-old man on a snowmobile was hurt and not responding, according to the sheriff's office. Crews from Meeker Fire Rescue, Rio Blanco County Search and Rescue, Classic Air Medical and Rio Blanco Sheriff's Office were dispatched to the area, the sheriff's office said.

Despite life-saving measures being performed by people at the scene, the man was pronounced dead, according to the sheriff's office.

The name of the man is not being released pending the notification of next of kin.
