CRESTED BUTTE, Colo. — A backcountry skier died in an avalanche Sunday afternoon near Crested Butte, the Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC) said.
The CAIC said it happened around 1 p.m. Sunday in an area of the Anthracite Range, known locally as the Playground, east of Ohio Peak. The skier's partners were able to find him and pull him from the avalanche debris, but he died from injuries sustained in the avalanche, the CAIC said.
The Gunnison County Sheriff's Office said the three other skiers who were with the man were able to get out of the area without help.
A helicopter crew recovered the man's body, the sheriff's office said. His name has not yet been released.
This is the second avalanche death in Colorado this winter. In late January, a backcountry snowboarder was killed in an avalanche in the Waterfall Creek area of Ophir outside of Telluride.
