Shuttered ice cream shop on South Broadway sustains extensive damage during early morning fire

Denver firefighters worked aggressively to battle the blaze, which broke out at Maria Empanada early Monday morning.

DENVER — A fire broke out early Monday morning at a building along South Broadway, the Denver Fire Department (DFD) said in a tweet.

Firefighters responded to 11 E. Louisiana Ave. shortly after 5:30 a.m. and worked aggressively to extinguish the fire. That’s near the intersection of Louisiana Avenue and South Broadway in Denver’s Platt Park neighborhood.

Denver Fire spokesperson Capt. Greg Pixley said the fire started at Maria Empanda and spread next door to the now-shuttered La Chupaflor ice cream shop.

The fire was under control within 20 minutes but the building sustained "extensive damage," DFD said.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Several roads in the area were closed as firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze. They have since reopened.
