Kayaker who died at Chatfield Reservoir is identified

Two kayakers fell into the Jefferson County reservoir on Saturday. One of them swam ashore, while the body of the other was found Sunday.

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. — The body of a kayaker who was found Sunday at Chatfield Reservoir was identified Tuesday as 33-year-old Kevin Smith, according to the Jefferson County Coroner's Office.

Two kayakers fell into Chatfield Reservoir on Saturday. One kayaker was able to swim to shore, and the other's body was found Sunday.

Late Saturday night, South Metro Fire Rescue (SMFR) said the search had turned into a recovery operation. South Metro said its units were clearing the scene, but that Colorado Parks & Wildlife officers and deputies from the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office would remain.

CPW officers launched an underwater drone to do a grid search in an attempt to try to locate the missing person, SMFR said. The kayaker's body was found by CPW's Marine Evidence Recovery Team overnight Sunday.

The kayaker who made it to shore was taken to a hospital in serious condition, SMFR said in a post.

The call about a water rescue came in a little before 8 p.m., South Metro said. Rescuers were searching near the Fox Run Picnic Area on the west side of the reservoir.

Initially, first responders searched onshore and on the water, but the onshore search was called off after information was confirmed that the missing kayaker did go under the water, South Metro said.

It's not known when the kayakers fell into the water, SMFR said.
