Man celebrating the 4th of July drowns in South Platte River

An Aurora man was celebrating the Fourth of July with family when he fell into the water.

DECKERS, Colo. — A man drowned after falling into the South Platte River near Deckers on Thursday.

Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said Jorge Ramirez-Flores, 57, was celebrating the Fourth of July with family and was walking on the rocks when he lost his balance and fell into the water around 4:45 p.m.

A family member tried to grab Ramirez-Flores out of the water but was unsuccessful due to the fast-moving current. He went downstream about two miles to Gaskill Bridge, where nearby people saw his unresponsive body and pulled him out of the river.

They attempted to revive Ramirez-Flores until North Fork Fire Rescue arrived. The crew took over resuscitation efforts but were unable to revive him.
