Days after fatal shooting and crash, car is still lodged in Adams County home

An Adams County homeowner said he's been left on his own to clean up after a deadly shooting and car crash on his block.

ADAMS COUNTY, Colo — Off Sherrelwood Drive in Adams County, a mangled stop sign still sat in the corner of Francisco Chacon’s yard on Tuesday, after a deadly shooting and crash two days before.

The Adams County Sheriff’s Office said a driver was shot about 2:20 a.m. Sunday in the 1800 block of Sherrelwood Drive, after a couple of juveniles in the street began firing shots as the car neared. The driver crashed into Chacon's car, which was parked in his driveway. The impact of the crash pushed his car into his home. The driver and her passenger were taken to a hospital, where the driver was later pronounced dead, investigators said.

The juveniles who fired shots ran from the scene, the sheriff's office said.

“It’s a horrific mess brought upon by an act of violence that doesn’t make sense to me," Chacon said.

He said it’s been difficult to move on from the crash because the scene remains fresh in his front yard. While the victim’s car has been towed away, Chacon’s own car remains pressed against the front of his home.

Adams County officials said they plan to replace the mangled stop sign but that Chacon is on his own for the rest of the cleanup.

“They just took her vehicle off the premises, and then we’re left to deal with all these pieces,” Chacon said. “We’re still with our hands out like this, just wondering what to do.”

Chacon said his family decided to leave the car where it is until insurance adjustors can arrive. They’ve spent much of the past few days pulling hundreds of pieces of debris out of their front yard.

“I’m not even sure how to get all this stuff up,” Chacon said.

Despite the mess, Chacon said he’s thankful his family wasn’t hurt. His thoughts are with the driver's family, and Chacon hopes an online fundraiser can help them clean up.

“I might be hurting financially, but they lost someone, and they have someone else having surgery,” he said. “I’m just grateful. I’m sad I lost my vehicles, I love my cars, but I love my family immensely more than that.”
