ADAMS COUNTY, Colo. — Deputies in Adams County are investigating a shooting that led to a car crash early Sunday morning.
The Adams County Sheriff's Office said a driver was shot in the 1800 block of Sherrelwood Drive at around 2:20 a.m. Her car crashed into Francisco Chacon's car, which was parked in his driveway. The crash pushed his car into his home.
"Horrible situation. Really scary," Chacon said. "Woke up to my wife screaming there was something going on upstairs, a big boom. Ran upstairs, looked at the car, I noticed there was a car hitting our house through the window, so I looked outside and there was another vehicle here."
Video from neighbors shows a car come flying along Sherrelwood Drive, landing in Chacon's yard.
The sheriff's office said two people were in the car when kids in the street started to shoot.
The woman driving the car was hit. Then the car crashed.
"The circumstances of what happened, this poor young girl and everything else, it's heartbreaking," Chacon said.
Chacon said they ran outside. He said others jumped in to help, too, calling 911.
Police and EMTs arrived quickly, Chacon said.
"From what I'd seen, it was a pretty scary sight," he said.
Both the driver and the passenger were taken to the hospital. The sheriff's office said the suspects ran off.
Chacon said these events have shaken his family and the neighborhood.
"I thought it was an accident because sometimes the kids race around here, that's the worst we see. But to hear of someone just getting shot, pretty horrible," Chacon said. "I'm kind of at a loss for words."
So far, at least one car has been hauled away. Chacon's car hasn't moved from its spot on his lawn.
"The structural damage, we're not even sure if we can move this yet because it's into the wall right there," Chacon said.
Still, he said, after everything that happened, he's counting himself and his family lucky.
"I mean at the end of the day though, it's unfortunate what happens to our property. But like I said, the worst case was the scene and that poor family," Chacon said. “I’m just hoping they catch these kids. I mean, they ruined their lives along with this. It’s too many touched by this. It’s sad.”
The sheriff's office said their investigators are working to identify the shooter or shooters.
Anyone with information on this case is asked to call the Adams County Sheriff's Office.
