COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — A 29-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of killing a man outside of the El Paso County courthouse last week, Colorado Springs Police said Monday.
Police said Shaquille Brown shot and killed 28-year-old William Winters in front of the courthouse on Tejon Street just after 10 a.m. Thursday. Brown is being held on suspicion of first-degree murder.
According to 9NEWS' partner station in Colorado Springs, KRDO, court documents say Brown told investigators he had been assaulted by Winters earlier this year. Brown said he was afraid of Winters and that Winters had sent him threats via text and Facebook, court documents say.
Brown said he got a handgun out of fear of Winters, court documents say. Brown said he saw Winters walking toward him outside the courthouse Thursday morning, according to court documents.
Brown then pulled a gun and shot Winters, court documents say. Brown told investigators he did not shoot Winters after he was on the ground, saying he didn’t want to “overkill” Winters because he only intended to stop a threat, court documents say.
Courthouse surveillance video showed Brown approach Winters, who was carrying a baby in a car seat, and begin shooting, according to court documents. The video then showed Brown standing over Winters firing several more times, court documents say.
When investigators questioned Brown about the differences between his story and what the video showed, he told police he "blacked out," according to court documents.
Brown is being held in the El Paso County jail under $1 million bond.
