DENVER — If you can, you might want to delay your commute-- that was the message in a tweet Tuesday morning from the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT).
It appears drivers heeded the warnings-- at least in Denver-- in a tweet the Denver Police Department (DPD) said that they had responded to just 11 traffic crashes between midnight and about 7:15 a.m. Tuesday.
Not everyone got the message about the dangers of puffing-- that's when you leave your car running while unattended. DPD said two so-called 'puffers' were stolen Tuesday morning.
Around 5:30 a.m. CDOT said there were slick roads throughout the region. The agency also warned drivers to allow double the time for their commute and reminded them to avoid to passing snow plows.
The slick road conditions, especially on bridges and overpasses, are expected to last through Tuesday with temperatures only expected to reach into the upper teens and low 20s.
Denver deployed its fleet of heavy snowplows to main streets around the city late Monday. Plow drivers dropped de-icer along their routes as needed.
Denver's Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DOTI) said that plowing of residential streets will occur between 3 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Tuesday.
When deployed, the residential plows will take one pass down the center of every side street to prevent deep ice rutting and to keep the streets passable, DOTI said.
DIA
As of 8 a.m.Tuesday morning, Denver International Airport (DIA) reported 15 cancellations and 21 delays.
DIA said Monday that crews were using more than 200 pieces of snow equipment for "full de-icing operations" and that travelers should expect to spend extra time in the aircraft before takeoff.
RTD
The Regional Transportation District (RTD) said on its web site Tuesday morning that due to the winter weather, some bus and light rail routes were experiencing delays of up to 20 minutes.
- Cancellations of train trips will be posted to the Rider Alert page.
- Riders can obtain the latest service updates via Twitter @RideRTD.
- Real-time locations for light rail and buses are available on Next Ride.
Weather
Much of metro Denver is under a WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY until 6 a.m. Tuesday.
Between 3-7 inches of accumulation is possible in the Denver metro area, with more in the western and southern suburbs.
