DENVER — The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) reminded travelers to expect busy security lines at Denver International Airport this week as many are expected to travel during the 4th of July holiday.
"Regardless of which day they are traveling or when they are traveling within the day, its going to be extremely busy," said Lorie Dankers spokesperson for TSA in Colorado.
On Sunday, TSA had its fourth busiest day at the airport ever, and four of the top 10 busiest days have been since Memorial Day weekend, Dankers said. More than 86,900 people were DIA screen at security checkpoints on Sunday.
TSA said it expects to screen more than 13.3 million people nationally between Wednesday and July 8. At DIA, they expect to screen more than 437,000 during that six-day period.
The peak day will likely be Sunday, July 7.
The busiest times at DIA checkpoints are between 4 a.m. and noon, and 1 and 3 p.m.
“We have been anticipating the arrival of the Fourth of July travel period and planning our security operations to ensure that we are prepared for the surge in travelers who will be coming to the airport," said Douglas Cruz, TSA federal security director for Colorado. "TSA will be on the job with security screening officers extending their shifts to ensure travelers have a smooth trip through DEN."
Cruz said travelers should prepare for security screening: Don't bring prohibited items in carry-on luggage, including fireworks, and allow plenty of time to go through the process.
The TSA has social media accounts dedicated to public questions about screenings.
