Heavy mountain traffic expected due to popular winter events, scattered snow

The Colorado Department of Transportation issued a travel alert for the Mountain Corridor on Interstate 70 this weekend.

COLORADO, USA — Fresh snow and popular events in Colorado's mountain towns are likely to make for some major traffic delays this weekend, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT).

CDOT issued a travel advisory for the Interstate 70 Mountain Corridor this weekend, saying that long travel times should be expected.

Heavy traffic volumes are expected along the corridor due to this weekend's winter events: the X Games in Aspen, Vail's Freestyle Competition and the International Snow Sculpture Championships in Breckenridge are likely to attract many guests. With the few inches of snow that fell on the mountains Friday, CDOT says drivers might experience delays.

The department said major traffic back-ups typically happen eastbound on Sundays.

CDOT suggested that anyone planning to drive along the Mountain Corridor should consider alternate modes of transportation. More information about different ways to get up to this weekend's events can be found on CDOT's travel advisory release.

The department recommends people check COtrip.org to find out about road conditions, construction zones, and traffic alerts.
