Free Denver park opens for snowboarders and skiers

The urban terrain park is free to ride for skiers and snowboarders in the heart of Denver.

DENVER — The Ruby Hill Rail Yard officially opened for the 2024 winter season on Friday.

Operated by Denver Parks and Recreation and Winter Park Resort, the urban terrain area is located at Ruby Hill Park off South Platte River Drive and West Florida Avenue.

Each winter, the terrain park opens with various features for skiers and snowboarders to ride for free. Weather permitting, the rail yard will be open through March.

The city said Winter Park Resort provided snow guns, staff and technical assistance in snowmaking efforts to build the rail yard with volunteers and Denver parks employees.  Recent cold weather has allowed for snowmaking and building of the rail yard.

New rails, boxes and features are being constructed this year and will include varying configurations for skill levels from beginner to advanced, the city said.

The rail yard is open daily during regular park hours from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. The park is lit every day from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m.

Beginning Friday, Feb. 2, Denver Parks and Recreationwill be providing free rental equipment, snowboards, boots and helmets, on Thursdays and Fridays from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. and on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Free community events will take place at the rail yard beginning with the Burton Mystery Series on Feb. 10, the Snowskate Slamfest on Feb. 17, and the CoreNation Tour Rail Jam on Feb. 24.

The Ruby Hill Rail Yard started in 2007 as a joint effort between Denver Parks and Recreation and Winter Park Resort. Winter Park Resort provides the rails, terrain park design and staff while Denver Parks and Recreation provides the location and management.
