WELD COUNTY, Colo. — Six people were killed in two separate crashes on Interstate 25 in Weld County Monday afternoon, the Colorado State Patrol said.
Troopers said one crash happened around 1:30 p.m. on northbound Interstate 25 near Highway 66 in Mead.
That crash involved four vehicles, including one semi. Investigators believe three of the vehicles involved were in the left lane of I-25 and slowed due to traffic when the semi rear-ended a Ford Edge at an unknown speed, according to CSP.
The Ford was pushed off the left side into the center median and a Mitsubishi Outlander in front of it, CSP said. Investigators believe the Ford was then hit a second time by the semi, before the semi came to a stop after hitting a cable rail in the median.
Five people in the Ford Edge, all from Gillette, Wyoming, were killed in that crash, CSP said:
- 20-year-old man
- 20-year-old woman
- 3-month-old girl
- 47-year-old woman
- 51-year-old man
Four of the victims were pronounced dead at the scene, and the 20-year-old man who was driving was declared dead at the hospital. The driver of another vehicle suffered minor injuries, troopers said.
The 26-year-old Denver man driving the semi was not injured, according to CSP. Investigators do not believe drugs, alcohol or speed were factors in the crash. The investigation remains open, and CSP said no charges have been filed at this time.
The second crash happened around 2:22 p.m. on northbound Interstate 25 near Highway 52 in the Dacono area. Troopers said that crash involved three vehicles, a motorcycle and two semi-trucks.
The motorcyclist was going north in the left lane when, one semi was in the center lane and another semi was in the right line, according to CSP.
The motorcyclist changed lanes multiple times before hitting the trailer of the semi in the center lane, and then hit the trailer of the semi in the right lane, CSP said.
The motorcycle rolled, slid into the middle lane, and was hit by the semi that was in the right lane, CSP said.
The driver of the semi in the middle lane did not stay at the scene, but the driver of the semi in the right lane did stay, according to CSP.
The motorcyclist, a 30-year-old man from Northglenn, Colorado was killed, according to CSP. The driver of the semi who remained at the scene was not injured.
Investigators believe the motorcycle was traveling at a high but unknown rate of speed, and drugs are alcohol are not considered factors in the crash, CSP said.
Portions of northbound Interstate 25 were closed for several hours due to the crashes. The interstate reopened Monday evening.
CSP is asking for witnesses who have not yet spoken to investigators to contact Sgt. Winsett at 970-506-4999.
