AURORA, Colo. — A driver in a vehicle with no license plates sped from a traffic stop, ran a red light and hit and killed a pedestrian who was crossing the road in a crosswalk early Friday morning, according to police.
The crash happened about 5 a.m. at the intersection of East Colfax Avenue and Havana Street, according to the Aurora Police Department.
Aurora Police patrol officers pulled over the driver of a 2008 Hyundai sedan without license plates near Colfax and Ironton Street. The driver stopped, and when an officer approached the vehicle on foot, the driver sped away, west on Colfax, police said in a news release.
The vehicle ran a red light, crashed into a pedestrian at Colfax and Havana and continued west on Colfax. The pedestrian was in the crosswalk, crossing Colfax, when they were struck and killed, police said.
Witnesses told officers there was a dark sedan with front-end damage pulled over at Colfax and Boston Street. Officers found the Hyundai unoccupied. They later found a man in the area who said he was a passenger in the vehicle at the time of the crash.
The driver of the Hyundai hasn't been found, police said.
All lanes of traffic at East Colfax Avenue and Havana Street were closed Friday morning, police said.
