Colorado track and field athletes begin Olympics events

Track and field events began Friday with a full slate of events including women's 100-meter heats at the Paris Olympics.

PARIS, France — Noah Lyles, Sha'carri Richardson and the stars of track and field are ready for their time in the spotlight of the 2024 Paris Olympics.

While soccer, rugby, cycling, basketball, gymnastics and swimming began the first weekend in Paris, track and field events begin a few days into the 16-day competition.

Track and field events kicked off Thursday at the Summer Games in Paris. The opening event was the men's 20km race walk and the women's 20km race walk.

On Friday, the track and field action accelerates with 10 events, including the men's decathlon, and the first round of women's 100-meter heats featuring Sha'carri Richardson.

The final track and field event is the women's marathon on Sunday, Aug. 11.

Colorado athletes competing in track and field

A number of competitors with ties to the state of Colorado will be competing in track and field in Paris.

Yared Nuguse

  • Hometown: Louisville, Kentucky
  • Dupont Manual High School
  • Notre Dame
  • Current residence: Boulder, Colorado
  • Discipline: Men’s 1500m
  • In 2019, Yared was the NCAA D1 champion in the 1500m. He came in second at the Olympic Trials, the first time he had lost to an American since 2022.

Valarie Allman

  • Longmont, Colorado

  • She was the co-valedictorian at Silver Creek High School.
  • She’s taking a leave of absence from her Masters in Communication program at Stanford to train. She won gold in Tokyo. This will be her second Olympics.

  • Valerie is making a comeback after having ACL surgery a year ago. She started running again in September, then really training in December.

Elise Cranny

  • Currently lives in Boulder
  • Competing in the women's 5,000m.
  • In high school, Cranny won two state cross country championships and two state track titles. This will be her second Olympics.

  • During Olympic Trials in 2021, Anna crashed into a hurdle and broke her foot, so she missed out on the Tokyo Olympics.
