Trio of best friends represent CSU at Olympic Trials

Mya Lesnar, Gabi Morris and Michaela Hawkins have shined for the Colorado State Rams. They now look to represent Team USA at the 2024 Olympics.

FORT COLLINS, Colo. — Three CSU Rams hope to shine at the Olympic Trials.

First-team All-American shot putters Mya Lesnar and Gabi Morris, and discus thrower Michaela Hawkins are all ecstatic to be here.

“It feels, to me, very surreal,” said Hawkins, who is a grad student. “I’ve dreamed of it, especially in the more recent years but it really does feel surreal and I feel very grateful.”

Rams junior Mya Lesnar, who has an indoor national championship and is the daughter of famous MMA and WWE fighter Brock Lesnar, says this is will be a valuable learning lesson, “It takes years and years and years to sometimes make it to the top so I think for us to be going to this experience like this early on in our careers is incredible.”

Senior Gabi Morris feels grateful, “To get here and then to be able to do it, not just to achieve some of your goals and live the dream of going to the trials, and to do it with some of your best friends is like a truly special unique experience.”

These three rams are truly besties, “Us and other people would describe us as all having very big personalities which makes it chaotic in the best way,” Hawkins joked.

Chaotic off the track but even on it! “You would think we are getting nothing done,” says Lesnar. “Like we don’t even really talk about track while we’re throwing. We’re just having a good time, but are we very serious? Yes.”

Morris, Lesnar and Hawkins are going into this weekend feeling loose: zero pressure, just good vibes.

“We’re just doing what we know to do and no one’s got expectations of us. We have expectations for us and coach does but that does make it kinda awesome,” said Hawkins.

Morris says this weekend is an opportunity for the Colorado State program to show out, “And three of us not only to get to the trials like we said, but to have a good shot from a dinky Mountain West school is super, super special and it’d be just really cool to kind of defy expectations for that reason and represent CSU in those ways.”
