Jay Norvell, CSU hold press conference before Buffs rematch

Colorado and Colorado State football won't stage a Rocky Mountain Showdown until 2029. The Buffs won last year's meeting in double-overtime.

FORT COLLINS, Colo. — Colorado State University (CSU) head football coach Jay Norvell addressed the media Monday ahead of the upcoming Rocky Mountain Showdown against the Colorado Buffaloes.

The CSU Rams are preparing for a rematch against Colorado head coach Deion Sanders and Buffaloes in the Rocky Mountain Showdown rivalry game, which CU won 43-35 last year in double-overtime in Boulder.

The Rams (1-1) are coming off a 38-7 win on Saturday over the Northern Colorado Bears at Fort Collins' Canvas Stadium.

The Buffaloes (1-1) and Sanders will try to regroup this weekend after a humiliating 28-10 loss against the Nebraska Cornhuskers on Saturday in Lincoln.

"It's always a special thing to play in a rivalry game and this is certainly one of those," Norvell said Monday. "Our kids know how important it is to play in a game like this."

"I think we'll have an incredible environment in Canvas [Stadium]," Norvell said. "I thought last week was great and I think this week will be even better just because of the nature of the game and we've been looking forward to it."

"Everything starts with their offense and their quarterback," Norvell said of Colorado. "They are very capable of being very explosive. They have a lot of speed at wide receiver with Hunter and Horn and Wester. They mostly attack through the air and everything goes through the quarterback, through Sanders."

"We're going to have to do a good job containing that. They can be explosive and when they make explosive plays they can be hard to slow down," Norvell said.

The football contest between Colorado and Colorado State won't be held again until the 2029 season.
