BOULDER, Colo. — The Colorado Buffaloes women's basketball team is the talk of the country after shocking the NCAA champions.
The CU Buffs defeated No. 1 and defending champion LSU 92-78 in the season opener on Monday night in Las Vegas.
It’s the first time that the No. 1 team and defending champions lost their opener since the 1995-96 season when UConn fell to Louisiana Tech, according to ESPN.
Colorado, which made the Sweet 16 last season for the first time since 2003, led most of the way in the convincing victory.
Colorado's head football coach Deion Sanders praised the CU women's basketball team at his weekly press conference Tuesday.
"They're coming and we should've played their theme music, cause they're balling" Sanders said Tuesday. "You know I'm a huge fan of their coach, Coach Payne, she's unbelieveable. Just to see her do her thing and witness her practices."
Shelomi Sanders, daughter of Deion Sanders, plays for the Colorado women's basketball team, but did not enter the game on Monday night.
"Just to get constant feedback from my daughter who's there and she called me late, I was already asleep, I was so tired yesterday. And she just called me screaming in the phone so happy and excited, full of joy about that accomplishment," said Deion Sanders.
"That is huge. We cannot underestimate what they just did. That was huge for the program, huge for the university and women's basketball. Hats off to 'em, I wish I could've been there to witness it myself, but it was a blessing."
"Congradulations immensely to our women's basketball team and our men's basketball team. Coach Payne and Coach Boyle for what they accomplished last night," Deion Sanders added. "And congrats to our soccer team for being selected to the NCAA tourney yesterday, that's quite an honor."
The CU women's basketball team next plays Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the CU Events Center in Boulder against Le Moyne.
