BOULDER, Colo. — The high school state quarterfinals begin Friday, and kicking it off are the only undefeated teams left in 5A, Fairview vs. Mountain Vista.
“This team is extremely special," Fairview head coach Tom McCartney said. "I've had a few teams go undefeated in the regular season, and so I believe this is team number five that has done it.”
In year 32 under "Coach Mac," the Knights are 11-0 and counting. Not to mention, Fairview has outscored their opponents by 384 points this season.
“The whole Knight brotherhood has really, like, come to a different level," star senior receiver Luke Strickland said. "And it's just awesome each week, going out there and winning with some of my best friends.”
One of their secret weapons is senior running back Jordan Rechel, who scored four touchdowns in four minutes against Prairie View earlier this season.
“It was pretty crazy, and I was pretty sick that day" Rechel said. "But I returned a kick return touchdown, and we got a stop on the next play, scored the next play, got the ball back, scored the next play on a deep pass, and then got another stop, and then scored a 95-yard rushing touchdown in four minutes.”
But next on the schedule will be their toughest test this year, the undefeated Mountain Vista Golden Eagles, led by the all-time passing touchdown leader in Austyn Modrzewski. But Coach Mac said his team is ready for the challenge.
“You gotta go after the king of the jungle," McCartney said. "You gotta be willing to hunt lions.”
Fairview will play Mountain Vista on Friday at 7 p.m. at Halftime Help Stadium.
