The shared impact of No. 21 for Arvada West football

Two players on two different teams share the same number on the road to a state championship.

ARVADA, Colo. — Arvada West's flag and tackle teams have two of the top receivers in the state.

Sara Walker and Noah Meurer are listed in the state's top 15 and both wear the same number, 21.

"I think sophomore year we didn't have the correct size because I wanted to be No. 8, because that's usually what I wear for football, but then my coach gave me number 21 I was like, all right, I'll go with this," Walker recalled. "And then I watched the boys tackle team that same year, and I was like, oh, number 21 on their team's pretty good too, so it's not a bad number."

Meanwhile, for Meurer, his number was a family affair.

"Unlike Sarah, I've been 21 since I was in the second grade," Meurer said. "It was my dad's number, I got to choose between my mom's and my dad's number, so I chose my dad's."

Tackle football has been the name of the game for Arvada West for quite some time, but when flag football won it all, people began to take notice.

"My first instinct was I really got to go watch them play," Meurer said, referring to Arvada West's flag football state championship. "So I went down to the Broncos' training facility and saw them play, and they're the real deal. They're really good."

And it's all love between the two teams because talent recognizes talent.

"We also see, like we could take that concept, or like we could do this, we could do that, you know, so, like we could take a lot of the stuff that they do and implement it into our game," Meurer said.

A lifelong dream turned reality for Walker.

"I really wanted to play tackle football, but my uncle, he told me no," Walker said.

Walker is the bonified number one receiver headed into state, but for her, Meurer is number one.

"I see a lot of similarities between me and him," Walker said. "He's a wide receiver. He's like, the jump ball type wide receiver, and so, like, if I had my money on any receiver in state, I'd put it on Noah."

The Arvada West flag football team will face No. 3 Valor Christian in the state semifinals.
