Four new 4-time champions highlight state wrestling tournament

Pomona won the Class 5A title for the sixth straight year, while Mead (4A) and Mullen (3A) captured their first team championships in school history.

DENVER — Time to update the record books.

The high school wrestling season came to an end Saturday night before an energized crowd made up of thousands of fans at Ball Arena.

Highlighting the final night of the three-day tournament were four wrestlers who joined the elusive club of athletes to win a state title in all four years of their high school career.

Persaeus Gomez made history as the first girls wrestler to four-peat as state champion.

"Growing up, I didn't have as many athletes to look up to. I was constantly told I shouldn't wrestle and that it's a boys sport," Gomez said. "Being a trailblazer myself and some of the athletes I look up to today, it's pretty cool."

The first wrestler to join the club of four-peat champions Saturday night was Mullen senior Dale O'Blia. Shortly after, D’mitri Garza-Alarcon became the first four-timer in Fort Lupton's school history.

Rounding out the night was Ciara Monger of Calhan, who completed an undefeated season (33-0) with her fourth title.

TEAM TITLES

Per usual, Pomona dominated the Class 5A team race with its sixth championship in a row and eighth in the past nine years. The Panthers also claimed the girls team championship, becoming the first school other than Chatfield to do so since the sport became sanctioned in 2021.

Mead (4A) and Mullen (3A) both captured their first team championships in school history.

After finishing runner-up in back-to-back years, Meeker finally broke through to win the 2A title.
