Pomona's Persaeus Gomez chasing history at wrestling state championships

The senior and three-time champion is aiming to become the first girl to four-peat in Colorado wrestling history.

DENVER — The Pomona girls wrestling team is flat-out dominating the state tournament — per usual. So, what's the secret?

"They listen really well and they trust in their corner that's that's the biggest thing that they trust in their corner," head coach Victor Gomez said.

A not-so-kept secret is their star wrestler, who's 32-0 this season: Persaeus Gomez.

"I've been working my butt off since I was five years old when I first started," Persaeus said.

She's looking to be the first female wrestler in Colorado history to win four straight state titles.

"She works with these younger girls. She spends her time she she takes him under her wing, she shows him stuff like high level stuff and I think that's why our younger girls are so tough," Gomez said.

"You know, she's she's not too good to step in there with them and just you know, spend a little bit of time and acknowledge them. And at a time when she was young, she didn't have that she didn't have people to look up to."

Gomez is on the verge of making history, as girls wrestling is in its fourth season as a CHSAA sanctioned sport.

"It was crazy to hear that my freshman year I would actually be sanctioned," Persaeus said. "So you know it was it was it fit right perfectly into everything. I feel like everything happens for a reason."

In her corner for her final high school matches is her dad, Coach Gomez.

"She knows when to listen, because as my daughter she so argue with that," Gomez said. "But as coach she real stoic listens and just gets to the point like she knows that she needs to do."

But to be a four-timer, Gomez has win out and complete an undefeated season. She defeated her quarterfinals opponent by pin in 34 seconds.

"I believe it's a trailblazing event for myself and just creating a path for younger generations of female wrestlers as well."
