Commentary: Rockies should trade Ryan McMahon before deadline

Despite having the third-worst record in all of baseball, Colorado won't cash in and trade one of their better players because he asked it not happen?

DENVER — As Major League Baseball's trade deadline (July 30th) nears, Colorado Rockies infielder Ryan McMahon is one of the names that has, and will continue to fill the rumor mill.

A .271 batting average, 14 home runs and 45 RBI All-Star season will do that.

At the MLB All-Star Game earlier this week in Arlington, Texas, McMahon told the New York Post he asked Rockies general manager Bill Schmidt to not trade him this year, quote, "We had a good talk and we came to the conclusion that I'm going to stay a Rockie."

McMahon then mentioned his young daughter and wife, saying she "would have to pack up the whole house and everything like that."

So let me get this straight: the Rockies, who have the third-worst record in all of baseball, won't cash in and trade one of their better players because he asked it not happen?

Dumb move.

This team is not a playoff team this year and the front office has made it very clear that they are building for the future. So why not add to the draft pick arsenal and move McMahon?  The second-rated prospect in their system is an infielder. I think they have the ability to trade McMahon!

And this stuff about moving your family if you're traded? No disrespect to McMahon's family, but really? He's worried about packing up the whole house? I think he could find some movers with his $70 million contract. Being traded is part of the business.

That's what you signed up for.
