DENVER — Denver celebrated 50 years of Pride Sunday with a parade down Colfax avenue, and some of your favorite sports teams joined the LGBTQ community in allyship. The Nuggets, Avalanche, and Mammoth host pride nights throughout their regular seasons, and are all regular attendees of the June celebration, but their appearance on the parade route this year has more importance than ever.
The LGBTQ community is under constant attack. Lawmakers are trying to prevent young trans athletes from participating at the youth level. Governors are signing bills into law to keep conversations about queer people out of schools. This country is making one thing clear: we don't belong.
Some pro sports teams -- and a small section of their fans -- have a history of being harmful and downright homophobic. All you have to do is look in the comment section of these teams proudly announcing they're walking in the parade. It's a scary space. So, when your favorite team stands up and says they're walking with you -- or rather walking for you, it makes you feel less alone. It makes you feel like you may just belong.
