DENVER — The Regional Transportation District is reporting its highest number of passengers since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic in the months of July and August. The boost is thanks to the Zero Fare for Cleaner Air campaign in its second year. Still, public transit may have a way to go before fully recovering from the drop in ridership since March 2020.
RTD leaders said in an Oct. 19 statement that the district saw a 10% increase in the overall number of boardings on bus, rail and paratransit services during the recent initiative. When compared with the same period last year, an additional 1,106,567 customer boardings occurred on RTD’s system during the months of July and August.
Last year’s program was only for the month of August, rather than the two months this year. In August 2022, overall ridership increased by 22% but participation is often influenced by the start of the school year. A report acknowledged that gains may have also been attributable to post-Covid rebounding ridership.
