Officers fired a taser at the man, but it was ineffective. They shot at him after he produced a handgun, the department said.

THORNTON, Colo. — A man was shot and injured by officers in a Thornton parking lot Tuesday night, the Thornton Police Department said.

Police said around 8 p.m., officers found a man with a warrant in a parking lot in the area of East 120th Avenue and Grant Street.

"As officers approached the male and told him he was under arrest, they gave him multiple commands, but he refused to comply and attempted to walk away," police said in a news release. "Officers fired a taser at the male however it was ineffective. The male produced a handgun, and officers fired, striking the individual."

Police said the man was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

Tuesday night, police had crime tape up around the pumps and parking lot of the Maverik gas station on East 120th Avenue. An area near the adjacent Applebee's and Denver North hotel was blocked off.

Police said the officers who discharged their weapons are being put on administrative leave, per standard protocol.

This is the second shooting involving Thornton police in the past two weeks.
