Man shot by Thornton officers last month dies from injuries

On Aug. 11, Thornton Police responded to the 9700 block of Washington Street for a report of a person with a gun, firing into the air.

THORNTON, Colo. — A man died at a Thornton hospital weeks after he was shot by Thornton officers during a standoff.

According to the Adams County coroner, Pedro Noe Sotelo, 46, died Sept. 1 at a Thornton hospital. He was initially injured during a standoff with officers on Aug. 11.

At about 7:54 p.m. that night, police responded to the 9700 block of Washington Street for a report of a person firing a gun into the air.

When officers arrived, they found a man, later identified as Sotelo armed with a gun. According to police, he pointed the gun at officers and barricaded himself inside of his vehicle. He continued to wave the gun around and pointed it at himself and officers, police said.

While police were trying to negotiate with him, he fired the gun from inside the vehicle, killing his dog, according to Thornton Police. A CodeRED notification was sent out to the community.

Thornton officers continued to negotiate with Sotelo for about 30 minutes while he remained inside his vehicle, according to police. A short time later, he got out of the vehicle and fired at officers, police said.

Officers returned fire, hitting Sotelo. He was taken to the hospital with serious injuries and died from his injuries on Sept. 1.

The investigation into the shooting is being handled by the 17th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team, police said. The officers who fired their weapons have been placed on administrative leave per department protocol, according to police. After the investigation is complete, the case will be reviewed by the district attorney's office.
