BROOMFIELD, Colo. — No charges will be filed in connection with the October fatal stabbing of an attempted robbery suspect in Broomfield.
Broomfield Police said that officers responded about 3 p.m. Oct. 11 to a report of a stabbing in the 3900 block of Cambridge Avenue in the Brandywine neighborhood. When they arrived on the scene, officers found a man dead inside the home.
The man, identified as Trenten Hansen, 30, was a suspect in a daytime robbery, police said.
Two adults were inside the home during the robbery, and one of them fatally stabbed Hansen. One of the residents sustained minor injuries, according to police.
On Tuesday, a spokesperson for Broomfield Police said they had completed their investigation and turned the case over to the 17th Judicial District Attorney's Office to determine if any charges were appropriate.
A spokesman for the DA's Office said that no charges will be filed in the case.
In a statement, the DA's Office said that after Hansen broke into the home, he told the homeowner and his adult daughter that he had killed before and had a 45mm handgun. He tied the homeowner and his daughter to a bedpost and threatened to kill them if they moved.
Hansen fired a gunshot into a wall, then found a large butcher knife, stabbed a mattress and again threatened to kill them, the DA's Office said.
Hansen began to fall asleep, possibly from drug use. The woman was able to free herself by chewing through the duct tape used to tie her and her father to the bedpost. She used the knife to cut the bindings on her father, who then took the knife and stabbed Hansen twice, the DA's Office said.
Hansen woke up and and wrestled with the homeowner before collapsing on top of him. He died at the scene.
"Based on the evidence and a thorough investigation, it is clear that the occupants of the home ... are immune from criminal prosecution," the DA's Office statement said.
