Family, community call on Denver DA to drop remaining murder charge against Stephan Long

A man said he feared for his life when he shot and killed two brothers on I-25 last June. He was arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder.

DENVER — Prosecutors have already dropped a murder charge against a man accused in the deaths of two brothers on Interstate 25, but advocates pushed on Thursday for the Denver District Attorney's Office to drop the other charge against him.

Stephan Long said he feared for his life when he shot and killed Damon and Blake Lucas on I-25 near Eighth Avenue last June. He was arrested moments after the shooting and was charged with two counts of first-degree murder. One of those charges was dropped last fall.

On Thursday afternoon, a small crowd gathered on the steps outside the Wellington Webb Municipal Building, clinging to signs with photos of Long. Denver Justice Project founder Alexander Landau was surrounded by family and supporters of Long, including his mother Stephanie Clifton.

"My son didn't do anything wrong," Clifton said. "We just want justice, we want justice."

According to court records, Long told investigators the two men pulled up next to him on the highway, yelled at him and attacked him. Stephan told 9NEWS he was scared and couldn't get away, so he shot the men and kept driving.

"Immediately after, Stephan Long was forced into a position of self-defense which took the lives of two other community members," Landau said. "He was immediately and aggressively charged with two counts of first-degree capital murder."

By their side sat 500 letters, written by Long's friends, community members and state representatives who support him. They all asked for one thing.

"Drop the last charge, do the right thing [District Attorney] Beth McCann, do the right thing," Clifton said.

Long was in court Friday morning, and the remaining murder charge was not dismissed. His trial was set for November.

9NEWS reached out to the District Attorney's Office about this case. A spokesperson declined to comment, citing the case being active.
