1 murder charge dropped against man in fatal road rage shooting, DA says

One of two murder charges against Stephan Long in a fatal June road rage shooting that killed two was dropped by the Denver District Attorney's Office Wednesday.

DENVER — One of two murder charges against a man in a fatal June road rage shooting was dropped by the Denver District Attorney's Office Wednesday.

Court records show prosecutors are dropping one of the murder charges against Stephan Long, who is accused of killing two brothers on Interstate 25 during a road rage incident this summer. It's unclear from the DA's Office why the one murder charge is being dropped, but it involves the charge in the death of Blake Lucas.

Denver police arrested Long back in June. Investigators said brothers Damon and Blake Lucas cut him off on I-25 near 6th Avenue.

Long's family claimed he was just trying to defend himself. Long told police they all pulled over— and the men walked up to his window and started hitting him.

Investigators said Long shot and killed them both and drove off. Prosecutors originally charged him with two counts of first-degree murder.

But Wednesday, court records show Denver's DA dropped one of the murder charges.

Last week, members of the Denver City Council sent a letter to DA Beth McCann after Long's family spoke at a council meeting.

The councilmembers asked why Long was charged— but the DA declined to file charges against a white man who shot and killed a 12-year-old boy in a stolen car back in February.
