Denver police hold wreath- laying ceremony for fallen officers

The traditional memorial event was amended to a wreath-laying ceremony due to the ongoing pandemic.

DENVER — A wreath was laid in remembrance of fallen officers on Thursday morning by the Denver Police Department (DPD).

DPD said the traditional memorial event was amended to a wreath-laying ceremony due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"The absence of the crowd here today in no way diminishes the respect and gratitude for our fallen officers," Chief Paul Pazen said. "These 72 women and men and their families made the ultimate sacrifice by placing the safety of others above self."

The event was held at the fallen officers' memorial in front of 1331 Cherokee Street.

"This memorial and these names are evidence of the inherent danger our officers face each and every day. It is also a testament to the courage that individuals will still step forward and put on this uniform in service of the Denver community," Pazen said.

Officers also held a moment of silence, performed a 21 gun salute and played taps to honor the sacrifice of the fallen officers.
