HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. — A post office in Highlands Ranch was dedicated in memory of Douglas County Deputy Zackari Parrish, who was shot and killed on New Year's Eve in 2017.
Monday's ceremony started at 1 p.m. at the post office at 9609 S. University Blvd. Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock was among those who spoke at the dedication. Also in attendance were U.S. Rep. Jason Crow and former Congressman Mike Coffman
Last December, Colorado lawmakers approved the renaming of the facility as the Deputy Sheriff Zackari Spurlock Parrish, III, Post Office Building. (Parrish's middle name is the same as the last name of the Douglas County sheriff.)
Parrish and four other deputies were attacked while responding to a disturbance call at the Copper Canyon apartment complex on County Line Road, between Colorado Boulevard and University Boulevard, about 5 a.m. December 31, 2017.
Parrish, a husband and father of two young children, died. Before Parrish joined DCSO, he was an officer with the Castle Rock Police Department for two years. His first law enforcement job was at the Morrison Police Department, where he served as a reserve officer from June 28, 2014, until the end of that year.
Just weeks after Parrish was killed, Adams County Deputy Heath Gumm was killed after responding to a disturbance call in the Thornton area.
The post office at 90 N. 4th Ave. in Brighton will be renamed in his honor.
