1 man dies, another injured after their rafts capsize

The Pitkin County Sheriff's Office said a 911 call was made just after 2 p.m. Saturday stating that the men's rafts had overturned at the Basalt Whitewater Park.

BASALT, Colo. — One of the two men rescued from the Roaring Fork River in Basalt after their boats capsized Saturday afternoon has died.

The Pitkin County Sheriff's Office said a 911 call was made just after 2 p.m. stating that the men's rafts had overturned at the Basalt Whitewater Park and the men were being carried downstream.

A slew of first responders rushed to the area to search for the men.

Responders began looking for the men at the pedestrian bridge at the 7-Eleven in Basalt to Willits Lane, which is about three driving miles to the west.

The men were spotted and pulled from the river near Two Rivers Road and Colorado Highway 82 in Basalt.

One of the rafters, 74-year-old Vilis J. "Butch" Zigurs, was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the coroner's office said. Investigators are working to determine how he died.

The other rafter, a 61-year-old man, was treated on scene after suffering minor injuries.

The sheriff's office said river flows are running near peak levels and said whitewater enthusiasts need to be aware of rapidly changing conditions.
