AURORA, Colo. — A passenger died in a crash Sunday night in Aurora after the man driving the car ran a red light, hit another vehicle and then hit a signal pole, according to police.

About 8:40 p.m., Aurora Police officers responded to a two-car crash that happened in the intersection of East Alameda Avenue and South Potomac Street, police said in a news release.

Officers determined that an Infiniti sedan was headed east on East Alameda Avenue when the driver ran a red light and hit a Ford Focus in the intersection. The Infiniti driver lost control and hit a signal pole on the southeast corner of the intersection, according to police.

A woman passenger was ejected from the car and died at the scene. Her name has not yet been released.

The driver of the Infiniti was identified as 19-year-old Damian Sanchez-Balderas, according to police. Police initially misstated the suspect's first name and age, but later corrected that information.

Sanchez-Balderas was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, police said. After he was cleared from the hospital, he was taken to the Aurora jail and arrested on suspicion of:

  • Vehicular homicide
  • Reckless driving
  • Driving under the influence
  • Driving vehicle with license revoked as a habitual traffic offender

The driver of the Ford was not injured, Aurora Police said.
