Greeley Police seeks tips in fatal hit-and-run crash

Christopher Barnes, 53, was killed one year ago this month. His family is still hoping for justice.

GREELEY, Colo — This month marks one year since a man was struck and killed in and hit-and-run crash in Greeley and his family is still seeking justice.

Around 8:20 p.m. on Feb. 4, 2023, Greeley officers responded to the intersection of 35th Avenue and 4th Street for reports about a crash that involved a vehicle and a pedestrian.

Witnesses reported that the driver immediately left after hitting the man, who was later identified as Christopher Barnes.

When officers arrived, they located Barnes, suffering from severe injuries. He was taken to a hospital where he died.

On Thursday, investigators released photos and video of a vehicle that could be connected to the crash. It's described as a gray, 2019 – 2023 Dodge Ram Mega Cab (4-door crew cab) pickup truck.

There is a large, approximately 10-inch wide, space behind where the rear doors would normally end. The truck is also believed to be a “Sport,” “Blackout,” or “Night” edition due to the overall lack of chrome and reflective badging.

The video above was taken by a security camera at a nearby home. The footage was recorded moments after the crash and shows the dark truck making a right turn onto the side street.

The truck likely sustained minor to moderate front-end damage from the collision, Greeley Police said.

Police said when they asked for tips that Barnes' family and friends "deserve to hold those responsible for his death accountable for their actions."

Anyone who has information about the truck or the person who was driving should contact Officer Tharp or Officer Wegscheider at 970-350-9533.
