ARVADA, Colo. — Two firefighters were injured and most of the 78 units inside a building at an Arvada self-storage facility were damaged in a fire Tuesday morning.
On Tuesday, firefighters with Arvada Fire responded to StorQuest near Interstate 70 and Wadsworth Boulevard around 6:15 a.m. and said there was a fire in the attic. They attempted to fight it from the inside but had to move outside and conduct a "defensive" fight due to the amount of smoke and fire.
"We were met with heavy smoke and heavy fire conditions so there is extensive damage," said Matt Osier, a deputy chief with Arvada Fire.
There are 18 units on the first floor and 60 smaller units on the top floor for a total of 78, Osier said.
"I would say at this point, I would say it looks like most of them were affected, either by fire or effects of our attempts of extinguishment," he said.
In an update on social media, the department said the injured firefighters were treated for minor injuries.
Firefighters said Thursday that the storage facility has been turned back over to the company. They said the investigation into the fire's cause could take another week.
