Man arrested in fatal Lakewood crash

The driver is being held on suspicion of DUI vehicular homicide and DUI vehicular assault, Lakewood Police said.

LAKEWOOD, Colo. — A man was arrested on vehicular homicide and other charges in connection with a crash that killed one person and injured another Wednesday morning, Lakewood Police said.

Beth Bargas, 65, of Lakewood died in the crash, which happened just before 6 a.m. Wednesday at the intersection of West Colfax Avenue and Garrison Street. 

In an arrest affidavit, police said Ilya Slavin, 37, was driving east on Colfax when he ran a red light and crashed into an Audi SUV. According to the affidavit, police estimate he was going about 73 mph when the crash happened -- double the posted speed limit of 35 mph. 

After the crash, Slavin's truck rolled into a nearby shopping center and hit another car.

Bargas, who was driving the Audi, died at the scene. Her passenger was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Slavin was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, police said. 

Police said Slavin is being held on suspicion of:

  • DUI vehicular homicide
  • DUI vehicular assault
  • Reckless driving
  • Failure to present evidence of insurance
  • Seat belt not in use

Slavin's next court appearance is set for June 12 in Jefferson County District Court.
