Suspected car thief leaves 4-month-old girl in Northglenn street

Two people found the girl in her car seat in the 10400 block of Carlile Street just before 6 p.m. Wednesday.

NORTHGLENN, Colo. — A 4-month-old girl is okay after being found in a Northglenn street Wednesday evening.

The case all began around 5 p.m. when someone stole a car from a shopping center located at the corner of 120th Avenue and Washington Street. The girl was in her car seat in the back when the vehicle was taken, police said.

About 40 minutes later, two people called police to report they found the girl in her car seat in the middle of the road in the 10400 block of Carlile Street, which is about two miles south of where the car was stolen.

A police spokesman said the child was not harmed and was reunited with her caregiver.

Police said they put out a 'be on the lookout' (BOLO) alert and utilized license plate scanners in an attempt to locate the stolen car. A license plate scanner in Thornton made a hit on the hot car, Northglenn Police said.

Thornton police chased the stolen vehicle and got it to stop in the 11300 block of Riverdale Drive in unincorporated Adams County, police said. The suspect driving the vehicle was a juvenile and was arrested without further incident, according to police.

Vanesa Acosta and her daughter, Daisy Flores, were just leaving their home to run an errand when they noticed something odd in the street outside their house. Flores said her mom decided to stop and check it out.

"She was like, 'We better go. Make sure nobody hits it, move it out of the way,'" she said. "We both noticed what it was and we both jumped out of the car but I was the one who grabbed her from her car seat."

Flores said the baby was a little girl — crying, but unharmed. Acosta said she ran to a neighbor's home to ask for help figuring out who, if anyone, knew the baby. Nobody did.

"After the neighbor, we called 911. To just let them know we found a baby in the middle of the road. It was really crazy," Acosta said.

The two wrapped the baby in blankets and held her until police arrived soon after. Both of them are still a bit stunned by the story, but glad to be part of its happy ending.

"Heart-wrenching. Who can do that, leave a poor baby in the road?" Flores said. "Glad my mom and I could be there to keep her safe until the cops reunited her with her parents."
