DENVER — A Denver jury has found Michael Pikes, 33, guilty in a fatal shooting in the Park Hill neighborhood in December 2018, according to the Denver District Attorney's Office.
Pikes was convicted on Monday, after eight hours of jury deliberation, in the killing of Jacy Kadison-Marshall, 37.
In finding Pikes guilty of first-degree murder, the jury rejected his claim of self-defense.
Kadison-Marshall died Dec. 1, 2018, in an apartment building in the 1500 block of Filbert Court, near East Colfax Avenue and Glencoe Street.
Pikes had called 911 to report he had shot the victim in self-defense, then hung up and fired more rounds at the victim, according to the DA's Office.
When police arrived on scene, they found Pikes in the second-floor landing of a staircase yelling, "Thank you for coming, I got him. I shot him and he is right here in my apartment room," according to the probable cause statement in the case.
Police immediately detained Pikes and located the victim.
Kadison-Marshall was transported to Denver Health, where he was pronounced deceased.
After he was taken into custody, Pikes told investigators that he shot the victim because Pikes thought he was armed, according to the probable cause statement.
Pikes will be sentenced May 1 in Denver District Court.
