Suspect arrested in death of man found in car in Lone Tree

NIOBRARA COUNTY, Wyo — A man wanted on suspicion of murder in Lone Tree has been arrested in Wyoming, a City of Lone Tree spokesperson said on Monday.

James Matthew Neal was arrested by Wyoming Highway Patrol troopers in Niobrara County, Wyoming, for another offense. He’s being held in Goshen County, Wyoming, said Nate Jones, communications director for Lone Tree.

Neal, 23, is wanted for on suspicion of murder in connection to the death of Michael Lohmeier, 73, of Centennial, who was found dead in his car in Lone Tree this month, according to Metro Denver Crime Stoppers.

About 12:25 p.m. Nov. 4, Lohmeier was found dead in his car, a 2009 Toyota Highlander, parked in the 8500 block of South Yosemite Street, near Park Meadow mall. Police said it appears Lohmeier died of a gunshot wound, and his death is being investigated as a homicide.

Neal was wanted on suspicion of first-degree murder, motor vehicle theft and possession of a weapon by a previous offender, according to court documents.

According to court records, Neal pleaded guilty to a charge of second-degree assault in El Paso County District Court in November 2020. He was sentenced to three years in the Department of Corrections but was given credit for the 162 days he had already spent in jail.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867 or visit metrodenvercrimestoppers.com. Tipsters can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward of up to $2,000. 

Metro Denver Crime Stoppers works by assigning a code to people who anonymously submit a tip. Information is shared with law enforcement, and Crime Stoppers is notified at the conclusion of the investigation. 

From there, an awards committee reviews the information provided and, if the information leads to an arrest, the tipster will be notified. Rewards can be collected using the code numbers received when the tip was originally submitted.
