Mother seeks justice after pregnant daughter killed in ambush attack

"You may have shot her; you may have pierced my daughter’s flesh, but you did not take her endless love," Chataca Brown said.

LAKEWOOD, Colo. — Lakewood Police are still searching for two of the seven people facing murder charges in the 2023 death of Melanie Massay.

Police said Massay, 21, was shot and killed in the 1300-block of Zephyr Street on Feb. 28. The killing happened "during an ambush by multiple suspects," police said.

In January, Lakewood police issued warrants for seven people in connection with the killing. Each was wanted for first-degree murder, police said. Two of those suspects, 23-year-old Isaac Pierrie and 19-year-old Jaliyah Burks, are still wanted.

It’s been nearly a year since Massay was murdered, and now her mother, Chataca Brown, is speaking out against the people accused in her daughter’s death.

“I am so glad that these five people are in jail,” Brown said. “You guys think you’re going to hide but you’re not. Isaac and Jaliyah, you will be found. I fear no man. I don’t fear their little ‘pow pows.’ I fear no man because that’s all they can do is shoot.”

On Tuesday, Brown went back to the spot in Lakewood where her daughter was killed.

“My daughter's body was right here,” Brown said. “You can still see blood drops from my child being slain.”

The next time Brown saw her daughter was when police removed her body from the scene.

“There were police everywhere,” Brown said. “There were like so many cars, I couldn't get up here if I wanted to. But what I did see was them bringing her out in a body bag.”

Brown lost more than her daughter that night.

“She was pregnant with twins,” she said. “I'm a hurting mother. This is painful.”

Behind all the pain and heartache, Brown has found a renewed strength.

“I don't like publicity,” she said. “I don't like attention. But for my daughter, it's OK to have the attention. It's OK to let people know how I truly feel. It's OK to show my face. It's OK. You may have shot her; you may have pierced my daughter’s flesh, but you did not take her endless love."

Anyone with information on Pierrie's or Burks' whereabouts is asked to call Lakewood police, or call Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867 or visit metrodenvercrimestoppers.com. Tipsters can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward of up to $2,000.
