GREENWOOD VILLAGE, Colo. — One shoplifting suspect was injured and another drove away while police officers tried to take them into custody Wednesday afternoon.
Greenwood Village Police said two people were suspected of shoplifting from the Sierra store located at Cherry Hills Marketplace located at Orchard Road and South University Boulevard. The suspects were sitting in an SUV when an officer tried to contact them just before 4:30 p.m., police said.
A viewer sent 9NEWS video of the incident which shows a police officer outside of the SUV with the driver's door open. The suspect, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, can be seen putting the Toyota SUV into reverse and beginning to back up. The officer gets hit by the open door and appears to have been partially dragged as the vehicle backs out. The other suspect, who was in the driver's seat, can be seen hanging out of the open door as the SUV begins moving while two other police officers approached it.
The SUV then drives toward the officers, striking another vehicle and stopping as another officer in a marked patrol car tried to block the suspects in. The suspect's SUV then reverses at a high speed.
The suspect then puts the SUV into drive and hits a car and a truck at it sped away. The suspect who had been partially hanging out of the open door falls from the SUV after it hit the second vehicle. Officers can then be seen rushing to give them aid.
Greenwood Village police said the injured suspect was taken to a hospital for treatment. The other suspect in the SUV can be seen speeding away. Police have not said whether that person was taken into custody.
