Man ID'd who shot Fort Collins Police officer before officers killed him

The shootout happened Sunday afternoon after a single-vehicle crash at Mountain and Bryan avenues.

FORT COLLINS, Colo. — A Fort Collins Police officer who was shot and injured during a shootout on Sunday afternoon has been released from the hospital, the Larimer County Sheriff's Office said on Monday.

The shooting happened after a single-vehicle rollover crash at West Mountain and South Bryan avenues just after noon Sunday. A Fort Collins Police sergeant and patrol officer responded to the scene. The driver, who was outside the vehicle, exchanged gunfire with police, the sheriff's office said. The officer was hit and injured.

The shooter then ran into Grandview Cemetery, and police set up a perimeter around the area. When officers found the man, they shot him. The man was taken to a hospital, where he died from his injuries, the sheriff's office said.

The Larimer County Coroner's Office identified the man as Clayton Pierce, 42, of Fort Collins.

The sheriff's office didn't identify the officer who was shot.

Investigators determined that Pierce had multiple firearms. Several parked vehicles and a police cruiser were hit by gunshots. No bystanders have reported injuries.

The sheriff's office said Pierce was the only person in the vehicle during the crash. There were also two dogs in the vehicle that ran away after the crash. One has been found. The other, a pit bull terrier, hasn't been found.

Grandview Cemetery and the surrounding roads were closed for about 11 hours while investigators processed the scene, the sheriff's office said.

The 8th Judicial District's Critical Incident Response Team is investigating the shooting.
