Man and officer injured in shootout in Fort Collins

The two people who were shot were both taken to the hospital.

FORT COLLINS, Colo — A Fort Collins Police officer and another person were injured in an exchange of gunfire at a cemetery Sunday, the police department said

Police said around 12:40 p.m., officers responded to a single-vehicle rollover at the intersection of Bryan Avenue and Mountain Avenue, near City Park. Police said "the driver exited the vehicle with a firearm and exchanged gunfire with officers, then ran toward Grandview Cemetery."

Officers followed the man into the cemetery, where, police said, "more gunfire occurred."

Police said the man was taken into custody and taken to the hospital to be treated for his injuries. There's no word on how badly he was injured.

The officer who was shot was also taken to the hospital, and is expected to survive.

Crista Huff's daughter lives nearby. Huff caught some of the commotion while she was outside.

"All the sudden, [the suspect] stops about 75 yards away," Huff said. "And he turns around. He’s facing our direction and he didn’t like pull [the gun] up right away, but he pulled it up, so clearly he was done fiddling with it. And just at that moment, you hear the sirens coming from all directions."

The 8th Judicial District's Critical Incident Response Team is investigating the shooting.
